Opportunities for Academic Internships
A variety of internship opportunities are available at the Historic Prallsville Mills Complex.
Our most recent student interns did research and assisted with feasibility studies and investigation at the complex for the DRMS hydropower effort. A previous intern worked on a special project that combined research, interviews and graphics/computer skills to create a history of Stockton Borough Baseball 1930-1950.
Call 609-397-3586 to find out the details.
The first 2011 workshop Marvelous Machines at the Mills will explores the six simple machines that have influenced the development of machinery, manufacturing and industrial growth. The 1-½ hour program for adults will be offered March 12 beginning at 1 PM to 2:30 PM in the Gristmill.
Learn how six simple tools worked together in the milling process and how they are still used to make life easier today. The program will provide a guided scavenger hunt inside the historic gristmill to locate the many gears, levers, pulleys and other simple machines that helped get work done at the historic complex.
Cost is $5.00 for Mill Society members and $25.00 for non members. Free handouts, tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.
Pre- egistration is required by calling 609-397-3586 or emailing drms@netcarrier.com
The second 2011 workshop Historic Preservation will be held in the historic Quarry office at the Prallsville Mill complex on Saturday March 19 at 1 PM. The 1-½ hour program is for adults.
Historic Preservation offered at 1 PM to 2:30 PM will concentrate on learning how to understand the history of your neighborhood by looking at the architecture of the surrounding buildings. Architectural styles of houses and outbuildings, historic buildings, streetscapes, neighborhoods and special landmarks tell the unique story of a community. The workshop will explain how to read buildings and will explore the forms and materials of historic structures while covering the history of historic preservation efforts.
The workshop also will examine the form, materials and architectural styles found in our built environment and increase awareness of the historic and cultural resources throughout our state. Slides of our areas diverse architecture will teach you how to understand, appreciate and protect the stories of the buildings in your town.
Cost is $5.00 for Mill Society members and $25.00 for non members. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Pre-registration is requested for the workshops by calling 609-397-3586 or emailing drms@netcarrier.com
Both programs will be presented by Janice Armstrong. Ms. Armstrong is an experienced teacher, and is a member of the faculty and Advisory Board of the Drew University Historic Preservation Program.
