New Workshops Offered for Spring 2010

The first set of 2010 workshops explore our local historic architecture in a two-part program offered Saturdays, March 6, noon to 2 PM and March 13, noon to 2:30 PM. Workshops will be held in the original Quarry Office in the historic Prallsville Mills complex in the D&R Canal State Park, Stockton, NJ.

Learn how to “read” the history of your neighborhood at a new workshop series entitled “Our Historic Places”. March 6th workshop: Learning how to “read” buildings The workshop will explore the forms and materials of historic structures and will also cover the history of historic preservation efforts. March 13th workshop:Architectural styles of houses and outbuildings.

Historic buildings, streetscapes, neighborhoods and special landmarks tell the unique story of a community. The workshops will examine the form, materials and architectural styles found in our built environment and increase awareness of the historic and cultural resources throughout our state. Slides of our area’s diverse building architecture will teach you how to understand, appreciate and protect the stories of the buildings in your town.

The series will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, March 6, from noon to 2 PM and March 13, noon to 2:30 PM at the Quarry Office building at the Prallsville Mills, Stockton, NJ. Cost is $35 for both sessions and $20 for a single session for non-members and $5.00 each session for Mill Society members. Bring a packed lunch; tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

A modified one-session version is available for home-schools, scouts and other interested groups by contacting the DRMS office.

Marvelous Machines

The second 2010 workshops “Marvelous Machines” will be held in the historic gristmill at the Prallsville Mill complex on April 25 and May 8

“Marvelous Machines at the Mills” explores the six simple machines that have influenced the development of machinery, manufacturing and industrial growth and made our lives easier. This program, being presented for the first time, will provide a guided scavenger hunt inside the historic gristmill to locate the many gears, levers, pulleys and other simple machines that helped make work easier at the complex. Learn how these six simple tools worked together in the milling process. The program begins with a one-hour workshop on the identification of the six simple machines and how they were used to make life easier for mankind. A one-hour tour of the mill follows to find the six simple tools and how they were used in Mill technology. A discussion, hands-on and take home activities are included.

The two-hour program for adults will be offered April 25 and May 8 beginning at 2 PM to 4 PM in the Gristmill at the Prallsville Mills, Stockton, NJ. Cost is $25.00 for non members. $5.00 for Mill Society members. Free handouts, tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

The Instructor Both program, “Our Historic Places” and “Marvelous Machines” will be presented by Janice Armstrong. Ms. Armstrong is an experienced teacher, and is a member of the faculty and Advisory Board of the Drew University Historic Preservation Program. She works as a consultant with historic sites to improve their educational programming, prepares National Register Nominations and grant applications. Ms. Armstrong is a resident of Milford and a life long resident of Hunterdon County. The programs are sponsored by the Delaware River Mill Society.

Prallsville Mills Docent Program

Guided tours of the Prallsville Mills are available by appointment or on Sundays when the Mill is open to the public. Check the Calendar of Events for available Sundays. These available dates are usually combined with carriage rides or story telling at the Prallsville Mill.

Volunteer and train to be a Mill Docent: By regularly attending the Brown Bag Lunch program for one hour every fourth Wednesday of the month you can train to become a Mill Docent.

Selected Wednesdays of every month

Selected Wednesdays 7:00 PM
Come share the dinner hour and learn of local topics by local speakers, see a movie, or find out about projects and activities by area residents. The Brown Bag Series is free for members and open to the public for a $ 3.00 donation selected Wednesdays. Join the Mill Society for $25.00 as an individual or $35.00 for a family. This new speakers series is just one benefit of becoming a Mill member, help preserve our local history and join the Mill. Bring your packed meal, meet your neighbors and join the fun.

History Lunch: The 4th Wednesday of the month, Noon to 1 PM
This Brown Bag Program always concentrates on the history of the Prallsville Mills site and is held in the Quarry Office building at 29 Risler Street. Volunteer and train to be a Mill Docent: By regularly attending the Brown Bag Lunch program for one hour every fourth Wednesday of the month you can train to become a Mill Docent. The Brown Bag Series is free for members and open to the public for a $ 3.00 donation each Wednesday, bring your packed lunch and learn Mill history.
